In this video Larry compares insulation materials, by showing the differences in performance of two types of materials commonly used in attic and wall cavity insulation: fiberglass and cellulose. Fiberglass insulation is frequently used in the United States, but as this video will show, cellulose insulation outperforms fiberglass in the vast majority of applications. Cellulose insulation is entirely made of recycled paper: old newspapers, phone books, and paper stock. To make that shredded paper suitable as an insulation material, the cellulose is treated with environmentally-friendly chemicals. In its original state, cellulose is very attractive to insects and known to support mold growth. Boric acid, a harmless chemical used for decades in many household applications as an antiseptic and insect repellent, is used to deter pests and prevent mold growth. Also since paper is highly flammable, cellulose insulation is treated with a fire-retardant material, making it outperform most types of insulation materials, including fiberglass, in terms of fire resistance. Using a little display built to compare cellulose and fiberglass, Larry shows how quickly and easily heat passes through a layer of fiberglass insulation when compared to a layer of cellulose insulation. Cellulose is denser than fiberglass and that gives the material a better R-value and makes it better at preventing heat transfer. That kind of performance makes all the difference during hot summer months when you are trying to keep the scorching heat from the attic from getting into your living space, or during cold days when you are trying to keep the heat from the conditioned area from being transferred to the freezing cold attic. Another added benefit of cellulose demonstrated in this video is the material's ability to muffle sounds from the street and from one room to another, making your home much quieter. Dense Packing Existing Walls
For many decades, the material of choice to insulate homes has been fiberglass. Blown fiberglass is used for the attic whereas fiberglass batts are used for wall cavities, ceilings, and pretty much everything else. Today, it is still a very popular insulation material, and is still used in new construction -- it is inexpensive and most builders and insulation contractors are used to it. Yet, there are several insulation materials available today that far outperform fiberglass insulation in many levels, and in the #61 episode of On the Job Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Dr. Energy Saver, will show us how spray foam insulation outperforms fiberglass batts when it comes to wall cavity insulation in new construction. Larry begins by reminding us that modern houses aren't built as rectangles with gabled roofs anymore. Most new homes have architectural features such as cantilevers, multi level areas, enclosures and fixtures that create irregular wall cavities and many challenges in terms of insulation.  The house showcased in this video is one example of this type of modern construction. Fiberglass has an R-Value of 3 per inch while spray foam has a R- Value of 7 per inch. R-Value is a measure of resistance to heat flow, and a lower R-Value per inch means that you need a thicker layer of fiberglass than you would of spray foam to insulate the same area and achieve the same ideal R-Value.  The problem is that the fiberglass R-Value is rated only when the material is fully fluffed, not when it is compressed and touching all the surfaces in the cavity, without edge gaps. A small 4% edge gap will cause a 30% decrease in the R-Value of fiberglass insulation. Add to that the fact that fiberglass has no air sealing capabilities, and air flows right through the material and you will begin to understand how it can be easily outperformed by other insulation materials, especially spray foam insulation.  Larry walks us through the many architectural and framing features of the building that would create several opportunities for insulation failure if fiberglass were the chosen material -- and he shows us just how easily closed spray foam can be applied to the exact same problem areas. Spray Foam Insulation vs. Fiberglass Batt Insulation
The typical attic is vented and not considered part of the conditioned space of the building. Attics are typically very hostile environments, as temperatures change drastically, year round, according to the seasons. In the winter time, the attic can get very cold, with freezing air getting into the space through open soffit and ridge vents. In the summer, the sun radiates heat through the roof, raising temperatures in the attic to scorching hot levels, much higher than the outside temperatures. If the attic lacks adequate insulation and proper air sealing -- and according to the U.S. Department of Energy, a significant number of homes in America have this problem -- these dramatic temperature variations will be transferred to the living areas, either conductively through the ceiling, or through air leakages. In homes that have HVAC ducts running through the attic, energy losses can be even greater. During the winter, heated air will lose temperature as it passes through ducts that are housed in a freezing cold attic. During the summer, the cool air running through a scorching attic will get warm before reaching the rooms that need to be cooled. Consider that an average of 40% of your home's total energy consumption going toward heating and cooling! With such large percentages of energy consumption going toward heating and cooling you will easily understand how important it is to conserve as much energy as possible in these areas.  The typical attic insulation job involves isolating the attic from the house (conditioned space). To do so, we utilize spray foam, to air seal any gaps that may cause air from the conditioned space to leak into the attic. Spray foam is applied around gaps around light fixtures, plumbing, wires, wall partitions, and chimneys in the attic floor. After air sealing is complete, blown insulation -- fiberglass or cellulose -- is commonly used to bring attic insulation R-Values up to the U.S. D.O.E. recommended values for attic insulation for each specific region of the country.  In this particular home, however, the attic wasn't a typical attic. The multi-level ceilings stood over walls that protruded from the attic floor, making it very hard to seal and insulate. This attic also included over 100 can light fixtures, posing some difficult challenges when it came to insulation and air sealing. To make matters even worse, the HVAC ducts ran through the attic!  For special cases like this, the best approach is to include the attic into the conditioned area of the home, and establish the roof, not the ceiling, as the thermal boundary. While there are a number of different materials that can be used to transform a vented attic into a conditioned space. The number one suggested material is closed cell spray foam insulation.  Spray foam expands when applied and fills gaps and voids, so the space is air sealed and insulated at the same time. Here is a sample of what Dense Packing a garage ceiling can achieve for your home. At the end of this video, you will watch the homeowners testimonial. We do the process slightly different, but all contractors and foreman have different methods, that achieve the same result!  In most homes, the garage is an unconditioned, unheated space. For that reason, the rooms above it need to be properly insulated and air sealed. In other words, the rooms need to be completely isolated from the garage. In this particular case, the floor above the garage was formerly insulated with fiberglass batts. Fiberglass bat is a poor choice for insulating this type of cavity because it only works when it is fluff, dry and evenly spread, filling the cavity completely. Yet, as it happened in this case and most of the time, installers leave huge gaps above, below and around the bats which allow the air to flow through. According to laws of physics, heat tends to move from warm to cold. In this home, the rooms above the garage were constantly losing heat from all the gaps in the insulation blanket. To solve this problem,in this video the Dr. Energy Saver team dense-packed cellulose insulation between the garage ceiling and floor. We accessed the bays through holes drilled on the external walls and injected dense-packing cellulose in the cavities with especially powerful equipment. Dense-packed cellulose has a much higher R-Value than fiberglass insulation and if properly applied, it also stops the airflow. This homeowner was able to feel the difference almost immediately. The two rooms above the garage weren't just warmer and more comfortable—they were quieter too.
